MAS Member Publishes Book for Young Scientists

Loree Griffin Burns, a children’s author and MAS member, has just published a new book called Citizen Scientists: Be a Part of the Scientific Discovery from Your Own Backyard. The book was officially published this week on Valentine’s Day. It aims for an audience of readers ages 10 and up and aims to show young people that they are, in fact, scientists! By showing ways that you can track nature and different animals from home and local parks, the book brings kids in to the science world easily. There is also a connection between the book and actual studies going on right now.

“Anyone can get involved in gathering data for ongoing, actual scientific studies such as the Audubon Bird Count and FrogWatch USA. Just get out into a field, urban park, or your own backyard. You can put your nose to a monarch pupa or listen for raucous frog calls. You can tally woodpeckers or sweep the grass for ladybugs. This book, full of engaging photos and useful tips, will show you how.” - Henry Holt and Co., Publisher

This isn’t Burns’ first book and her other have received stellar reviews. Her first book Tracking Trash is about the watery cargo spilled in to the ocean that usually contains garbage that pollutes the environment. The goal of the book is to make the readers aware of the problem, hopefully inspiring them to make a change! Her second book The Hive Detectives: Chronicle of a Honey Bee Catastropheis about the lives of bees and their importance in our world. Burns’ investigates the recent dwindling of the bee population searching for a cause of deaths.

The MAS is proud to have a member like Loree who is bringing science to life for young people. This is exactly the kind of thing we try to do here every day. Congratulations, Loree!
