Summary:
Students understand the mechanics behind the formation of a layered sphere.
Materials:
Jawbreakers
5-8 different colored yarns (rolled in to balls, one ball per student)
clear packing tape
ruler
razor blade

ENJOY a jawbreaker in front of students!  Then smash it with a hammer, show the students the different layers, and hold an open discussion about how they imagine it was made .  Then break students into small groups, handing each student a ball of yarn, and each group some clear tape.  Challenge students to create a sphere that stays together, and that has multiple colored layers.  When the groups are ready, test their spheres by slicing them in half.  Are the layers visible?  How thick are the outer layers compared to the inner layers?  Reward students with jawbreakers if you are so inclined!
