1.  Large group discussion of the history of wolves, where they once lived, and where they live now.  What do they look like in different climates?  Discuss natural selection.

2.  Act out 2 possible domestication scenarios.

Scenario A: Humans adopted wolf pups, choosing those that were less aggressive and better at begging for food.

-1/3 of the student are humans with food, 1/3 of the students are docile wolves who beg for human scraps, the other are aggressive hunter wolves are “wild”, and wary of humans, i.e., less adept at begging for food.

-Which wolves continue to live with the humans, and have puppies with similar traits?

-Which have to work harder for food?

-Which fall ill easier?

Scenario 2: Dogs domesticated themselves by becoming scavengers that looked for food at human trash dumps. Animals that were less likely to flee from people became increasingly tame through the generations.

-Assign students as wolves or humans

-assign an area that is the “dump” with plenty of scraps of food during a difficult winter season for wolves

-some wolves should act less afraid of human interaction, an be more comfortable staying in the dump

-Some wolves should be more timid, and run away if any humans approach the dump.

-What will happen to the wolves that stay away from the dump?

-The ones that aren't afraid of the dump will become a little lazy about hunting and will wait for people to deposit their food into the dump.
